Parade Units

Notice

At this time, we are moving forward in the planning of the Fantasy of Lights Parades: however, we are fully aware that we can only make decisions based on the information that is available to us right now from City and State officials due to COVID-19-19. With that said, we understand, as things change, we may have to postpone or cancel events in 2020.

In light of the health and safety of our community, we are working closely with the City of Tempe to make changes to the Downtown Tempe Events in an effort to still produce them while keeping social distancing and the health of the community as the top priority.

This year, the Boat Parade will look a little different but will still offer a fun time for everyone! Our plan is to hold a reverse parade. This year, all parade units will be staged along the Southside of the lake between the Mill Ave Bridge and the Rural Bridge from 6 PM – 8 PM. Boats will anchor and stay stationary during this time while the attendees walk a one-way loop to view the parade units (judges will also be walking this loop). At 8 PM, the parade units will move between the Mill Ave Bridge and the Light Rail Bridge to view the fireworks. At the conclusion of the fireworks, the parade units will travel along the North side of the lake for any attendees watching from that side of the lake and exit the lake.

Awards & Judges

As a participant in the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade, you are automatically entered into the competition to win some great cash prizes! Your unit number/burgee must be visible on the port side of your boat to be judged.

A panel of local community members will use the following criteria to determine the winners: originality, technical design, and entertainment value, to maximize the parade theme. Overtly commercial units that do not conform to the entertainment theme will be disqualified.

This year, cash prizes of $500 each will be awarded to the best units in 6 separate categories:

  • Best Use of Lights
  • Best New Entry
  • Best Special Effects
  • Best Music
  • Best Themed
  • Best Originality
