Artist Oliverio Balcells set out to tell the story of ancient Tempe by honoring the Hohokam and Toltec people. When looking at this piece be sure to take special notice of the Hohokam-style petroglyphs and classic Toltec symbols for corn, beans, and squash. This piece melds ancient Tempe and modern to highlight the unique character of the city. 

Bacells’ purpose as an artist is to educate and raise people's consciousness through native Mexican cultural teaching.
