4 Staycation Ideas for Summer '17

Posted 05.24.17 by Miranda

Triple digit heat means that summer is officially here…yay! Ok, I’m actually not excited about the next few months – walking through misters for a drop of moisture, getting in the car with oven mitts (do people actually do this?) and the swamp…you know what I’m talking about!

Posted 02.08.17 by Miranda

I know some of you think Valentine’s Day is grossly commercialized, and I can’t say that I disagree with you. That’s why I wanted to share these 5 Downtown Tempe experiences with you -- Ditch the cliché box of chocolates, useless stuffed animal and bouquet of flowers on February 14th and give your Valentine’s Day a major upgrade with a super sweet and sentimental experience in the place that you love with the ones that you love, whether they be significant others, family members or close friends.

1. A Casual Date Night on Mill Avenue

So, I can’t exactly take credit for this one. We published a blog last month titled “6 Downtown Tempe Date Nights” and there was one in particular that I was drawn to because it sounded like a more casual and fun option with less pressure to impress or be overly romantic. Check out #5: The Date Night of Laughter. There is nothing that says love like laughter!

Recently, one of my best friends from home (Minnesota) ventured to Tempe to spend a long weekend with me. This was her first time ever visiting Arizona, so I wanted to make sure it was a good one.

We stayed pretty busy despite the triple digit temps (which she mentioned was more tolerable than the humidity happening back at home) both inside and outside of Downtown Tempe. She finally understood (and fully adopted) the phrase "but it's a dry heat!"

Here are the few of the Downtown Tempe things I showed off to my MN friend, all of which were great tactics in my overall plan to convince her to move here to Tempe. :)

Are You Sirius?

Posted 08.22.16 by Lori

Are you SIRIUS? That’s the question I’ve been asking myself when I see people on motorized bicycles. But not Sirius, as in the brightest star in the sky, but serious as in acting or speaking sincerely. Turns out, I should have been using the brightest star version.

4 Excuses Why You Haven't Tried Stand-up Paddle Boarding Yet - SQUASHED

We’ve all seen those people out on Tempe Town Lake… boating, rowing, and standing up on a giant surf board looking thing. For the last few weeks, I’ve been wishing I was one of those people. I kept pushing my water adventures off though… but why? To be completely honest; 1. I was scared 2. I had no idea how to make it happen.

Have you ever heard of an “escape room” or an “escape game experience”? If you haven’t, it involves a group of people getting locked into a room, usually themed around horror or fantasy, and the team must solve a series of puzzles in order to get out.

Calling All Bikers - Schwinn, not Harley!

Posted 06.15.15 by Danielle

I don’t want to state the obvious, but we all know that Downtown Tempe loves bicycles and those who ride their bikes to work, class, or just for a leisurely ride. Since 2003, Tempe has been considered a Bicycle Friendly Community by The League of American Bicyclists.  That means that Tempe “welcomes bicyclists by providing safe accommodations for bicycling and encouraging people to bike for transportation and recreation. A bicycle-friendly place makes bicycling safe, comfortable, and convenient for people of all ages and abilities.” That’s a GREAT national distinction for our downtown!

A Tourist in My Own Downtown

Places Mentioned: Hayden Flour Mill, House of Tricks Restaurant, Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe Center for the Arts

Once a month, I have the pleasure of taking Downtown Tempe’s Safe-T-Patrol and Ground Support teams on a Familiarization tour. These FAM Tours are a blast! I get to spend some quality time with the people who work so hard to keep our downtown clean & safe, and I also get to be a tourist of the city in which I live and work. Not a bag gig, huh? I know you’ve seen the guys in bright yellow shirts – they're your Safe-T-Patrol. Hopefully you’ve noticed the folks in red shirts as well – that’s your Ground Support team. Together the two teams act as ambassadors for Downtown Tempe.

Steady Mobbin'

Posted 05.11.15 by Miranda

With temperatures rising and soon to be in the triple digits for 3 consecutive months, residents from around the valley are putting together their summer game plans while visitors are planning their summer vacations everywhere else except for the desert. Those of us who have survived the blazing summers know the drill – we stay inside, we get out of town, or we staycation. But how do our small downtown businesses survive? Some may have the luxury of closing for a month during the summer, while some may adjust to summer hours, but for many…the struggle is REAL. The reality is, many restaurants, bars and retail shops are empty – bustling streets turn into ghost towns, business is slooooooww, and a lot of employees lose hours.

Green with Envy

Posted 05.06.15 by Danielle

I've been in Arizona for 10 month now and am finally getting acclimated to the plethora of brownish reds native to the desert landscape. My eyes are accustomed to plush greenery. After several months of blinders, I am really starting to take in what's around me. I must say that I'm quite impressed with how many trees surround us. I didn't expect the desert, let alone Downtown Tempe to have so many asset that I'm sure has other urban environments green with envy.
