5 Reasons To Join The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Tag: BlogEvents

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Phoenix is a family-friendly fundraiser that benefits the American Cancer Society to save lives from breast cancer. In its 23rd year, this is one of the largest charity events in the Valley. In case you needed a reason to join the cause, here are 5…

1. Get exercise in the beautiful scenery

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Phoenix is a non-competitive 3-mile loop around Tempe Town Lake, beginning and ending at Tempe Beach Park. The route will take you across the Mill Avenue bridge and through Papago Park, before you cross again on Rural Road, and walk along the lake to the finish line. That’s approximately 6,000 steps, or about 375 calories burned. And since Strides takes place right before Halloween, you’ll be burning off all that candy before you eat it.

2. The weather is beautiful in October

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Phoenix will take place on Saturday, October 23 at 8 a.m. The annual average temperature on this date is a high of 86 degrees, with morning lows in the 60s. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the cooler autumn temperatures after a long, Arizona summer!

3. Pink looks good on you

It’s true! Pink is a great color and the official hue for breast cancer awareness. But it is not just women sporting their best pink attire at Making Strides: real men also wear pink. In fact, that’s the name of the Society’s initiative where men get involved in saving lives from breast cancer. Not only are men affected by the disease – more than 2,500 will be diagnosed this year – over 266,000 of their wives, partners, friends, sisters, mothers, and daughters will also hear the words, “you have breast cancer.” On a Saturday morning in October, you can be part of the pink wave in Tempe to help them.

4. Make new friends

20,000 new friends, to be exact. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is one of the largest fundraising walks in the Phoenix area, and the fifth largest breast cancer walk for the American Cancer Society in the country. Meet and cheer for over 800 breast cancer survivors, and experience the camaraderie shared with so many people united for the same cause.

5. Save lives

Breast cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer in Arizona, and more than 5,630 women will be diagnosed in our state this year. Almost 900 will lose their lives to the disease. But with determination and funds raised by the American Cancer Society, the death rate from breast cancer has declined 39 percent in the past two decades. The dollars raised at Making Strides enable the Society to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by the disease; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. But we need your help. Join us on Saturday, October 23 at Tempe Beach Park and help us save lives from breast cancer! Register here: www.MakingStridesWalk.org/PhoenixAZ
