ASU Spring Break 2026: The Ultimate Downtown Tempe Staycation Guide

Category STUDENT LIFE

Ahhh, finally! We’ve officially been released from the shackles of midterms. It’s early March, and spring break 2026 is here at last.

Since ASU's spring break lasts for one full week, a common question is: where do ASU students go for spring break if they aren't heading to the coast? If you’re staying in town, downtown Tempe is the ultimate move for a fun and relaxed spring break ASU experience.

As a fellow Sun Devil finishing up my final semester at ASU, I know the "midterm burnout" is very real. Between my architecture studio projects and marketing deadlines, I’ve learned that you don't need a boarding pass to actually reset. Instead of booking a flight, I’m staying local to recharge. Here are some of the things I’ll be doing to relax, hit the reset button, and actually enjoy our city without the stress of a syllabus. Downtown has it all, so grab your friends and use this as your guide to planning a top-tier Tempe spring break.

Outdoor Escape

If you’re looking for an outdoor escape, head over to Tempe Town Lake. It’s the perfect spot to rent some paddleboards, kayaks or cruise the lake on a pedal boat if you're feeling active. If "low-key" is more your speed, grab your besties, some snacks, and a blanket for a lakeside picnic. The weather is perfection right now, so don’t forget your cameras to catch the sunset, it's the essential group chat pic everyone needs on their feed.

Retail Therapy

You can’t spend the week off without exploring the bustling Mill Avenue for a little bit of literal retail therapy at, well, Retail Therapy! While you’re wandering through the shops, make sure to duck into The Plant Mill to pick up some new green roommates for your space, and don’t forget to stop by Lotions & Potions for all the self-care essentials you need to actually relax this week.

Better Together

If you’re looking for some group activities that doesn't involve opening a textbook, downtown has some of the coolest creative spots to hit with the crew. You can head over to Tutugether to tuft your own custom, creative rugs or visit Candle Chemistry to craft your own signature scents. It’s the perfect way to bottle up those sweet spring break memories into something you can actually keep.

Must Try Eats

I definitely didn't forget about my fellow foodies, because a spring break cooldown is a total necessity. When you need a refreshing snack, Rush Bowls is the go-to, but if you’re craving something a little more indulgent, you have to check out Sexy Burger or Filthy Animal. For a more elevated sit-down vibe, Alter Ego is always a great move. And of course, for the best "sip and yap" sessions where you can finally spill all the tea, you have to hit up Postino or Alibi Rooftop Lounge for those iconic skyline views and great conversation.
