Clean & Safe
Working every day to keep Downtown Tempe clean, welcoming, and supported.
Keeping Downtown Tempe clean and safe is a year-round priority. Downtown Tempe's Clean & Safe team provides enhanced services throughout the district, working alongside the City of Tempe, Tempe Police, downtown businesses, and community partners to help care for our streets and public spaces.
From daily cleaning and graffiti removal to an on-the-ground safety presence and connections to helpful resources, our teams are here to support the people who live, work, visit, and do business in Downtown Tempe.
A Layered Approach to Downtown Safety
Downtown Tempe’s safety plan takes a layered approach, bringing together Safety Patrol Guides, Tempe Police, and overnight security services to provide a consistent presence throughout the district. Each resource has a different role, and together they provide businesses, employees, residents, and visitors with multiple points of support.
Safety Patrol Guides provide an on-the-ground presence during daytime and evening hours, patrolling Downtown Tempe on foot and by bicycle. Guides can assist with concerns, connect businesses with the appropriate resources, and communicate directly with Tempe Police when additional support is needed.
Tempe Police are the primary resource for emergencies, crimes in progress, and situations where you feel unsafe. For non-emergency matters, contact Tempe Police through their non-emergency line. Businesses are also encouraged to consistently report incidents such as theft, vandalism, suspicious activity, and ongoing concerns. Reporting creates a documented record that helps law enforcement identify patterns, connect repeat incidents, build cases, and determine where enforcement resources are needed.
Overnight security services provide an additional layer after Safety Patrol hours. Windom Security patrols Downtown Tempe from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and can be dispatched by phone. Because Windom patrols the entire downtown district and typically responds by vehicle, response times may vary.
Know Who To Call
Knowing which resource to contact—and when—helps ensure you receive the quickest and most appropriate response. Businesses are encouraged to make sure all staff are familiar with available security services, hours of operation, and contact information.
- Emergency or crime in progress: Call Tempe Police 911
- Non-emergency police matters: Tempe Police through the non-emergency line 480-350-8311
- Daytime and evening assistance: Contact Safety Patrol at 480.894.1800.
- Overnight security: Dispatch Windom Security between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. 480.865.4272
Safety Patrol hours are:
- Monday–Friday: 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 11:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Businesses with security cameras are also encouraged to share footage or register cameras with Tempe Police when appropriate. Camera footage can be an important resource for investigations and identifying individuals involved in reported incidents.
The Downtown Tempe Authority is here to help businesses navigate these resources and identify the appropriate point of contact. Please continue to let us know when issues arise so we can stay informed of patterns throughout downtown. At the same time, reporting incidents directly through the appropriate public safety channels is one of the most effective ways to ensure concerns are documented and can receive appropriate follow-up.
